Software Comparison. A2K Webinars. While working on your design you may notice that measurements are in inches imperial rather than millimetres metric.

Depending on how you are taught or what you prefer, you may want to change your measurement settings to metric. So, how can this be done? I suspect it has something to do with your view, or you are drawing objects with elevation. Hi — I frequently receive drawings in mm from architects but need to convert to Metres to upload the drawing into my survey controller. I rescale the drawing which is fine but all the dimensions and there are normally a great many do not rescale.

I have not found a way as yet to rescale them and end up turning the dimension layer off. I would prefer to have the dimensions on the rescaled drawing but at the moment they end up as a huge blob of lines and figures. Is there a simple way to rescale the dimensions? Kind regards Bob bright. How did you scale the drawing? I would suggest you to modify the dimension style, change the text and arrow size to match the current scale.

Units in the drawing i received are set to Decimal and Inches. When I dimension the existing drawing, it gives me measurements in mm. But I would like to convert and draw in inches and check the dimensions in inches.

I would like to use your second method — insert the drawing method. Could you please describe in detail how I can do this. Also, when I try to create a new drawing, what should i select as i have never used different templates before. And what should the factor be when I insert? Another problem is the dim style. When I am right now Dimensioning my existing drawing, it dimensions in mm with showing also alternative units in feet and inches.

Depending on your selection you may or may not see following prompts on the command line. Select yes from both of these prompts. Your drawing is now converted to metric with millimeter as drawing unit. You can verify the result by measuring the distance between any two points in the drawing, it will now be reported in millimeter instead of inches.

This method of converting unit is destructive in nature and you will lose a lot of data from your drawing, mostly named objects like layers, blocks, and linetypes. Open a new session of AutoCAD and click on New Drawing from the application menu, a template selection window will appear select acadiso.

Now type UN on the command line and press enter Units window will appear. Select millimeters from Insertion Scale drop-down menu, you can select any other unit as well as per your own need but for this article, I will stick with millimeters. Now type I on the command line and press enter, browse your imperial unit drawing Sample. DWG from insert window. Uncheck Specify On-screen radio button from insertion point, Scale and Rotation panels, also make sure explode radio button is checked in the lower left corner of the Insert window.

If you have followed all these steps correctly then you will see a conversion factor of Your drawing with converted units will be inserted into the new template and now if you check distances in drawing it will be reported in millimeter instead of original inches. Did you find this tip useful and which method you prefer to convert your drawings from one unit to other?

Let me know in comments below. Very good article. So should we stick to first method through command line and not the second method block import since second method is destructive in nature?
